Operators and Connectives

These are of course the key to the development of language systems.  Consider arithmetic, for example, which has addition and multiplication as two functions.  Is there anything fundamentally different about addition from multiplication?  How would we characterise the difference.  It seems difficult to characterise arithmetic in any other way - it seems too obvious.  The same could be true of multiplication.  After all multiplication is simply a lot of consecutive additions.
